HBL PSL Breaks Records: Massive Surge in Live Streaming and Broadcast Rights Sets New Benchmarks
In a groundbreaking development for cricket enthusiasts, the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) has witnessed a remarkable surge of 113% and 45% in the sale of live streaming and broadcast rights for its 2024 and 2025 editions, respectively. The announcement was made by Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Interim Management Committee, during a media conference held at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Zaka Ashraf credited the bid teams, which included representatives from the PSL franchises, for the substantial gains from the sale of streaming and broadcast rights. He highlighted that a significant portion, 95% to be precise, of the total income generated from the PSL would be distributed among the six franchises. This financial windfall not only delighted the existing franchises but is expected to attract more investors to the league in the future.
Naila Bhatti, the PSL commissioner, provided insight into the bidding process. Despite initial concerns about the country's economic climate affecting the response, the PCB was pleasantly surprised. In the second round of bidding, ARY Communications emerged victorious with a staggering bid of around Rs7 billion, marking a record increase of 45%. Additionally, Walee Technologies secured the live streaming rights with a bid that saw a remarkable surge of 113%.
The PCB officially announced the historic achievement in a press release. It stated that ARY Communications and Walee Technologies had submitted the highest bids for broadcasting and live streaming rights, respectively. The release outlined the increase as 45% and 113% for the 2024 and 2025 editions, emphasizing the success of the public tender process.
Zaka Ashraf also revealed that the PCB and Cricket Australia (CA) are set to enhance their cooperation across various aspects of the game. Both boards are working towards signing an agreement that will facilitate increased collaboration. Under this understanding, U-19, 'A' sides, and women's teams from both countries will engage in annual tours, fostering better player development and familiarity with playing conditions.
Discussing the development of cricket infrastructure in Pakistan, Zaka Ashraf shared that the Pakistan Army has offered to construct stadiums in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) areas of different cities. Furthermore, the Punjab government has expressed readiness to hand over certain cricket venues to the PCB. These initiatives aim to strengthen the cricketing infrastructure in the country.
The surge in live streaming and broadcast rights for the HBL PSL not only signifies the growing popularity of the tournament but also sets the stage for enhanced financial opportunities for franchises and potential investors. The collaborative efforts between PCB and Cricket Australia promise a brighter future for cricket development, with increased bilateral engagements benefitting players at various levels. The positive developments in cricket infrastructure underscore a commitment to fostering the sport's growth and providing players with the best possible platforms for success.
